About Turkey
Admittedly, you could now argue about whether Turkey belongs to Europe or Asia. In fact, Turkey is the only country on two different continents.
The European part is called Thrace, the much larger Asian part Anatolia. Both parts are separated by the strait of the Bosporus, which runs through the middle of the city of Istanbul.
Here I assign Turkey to Europe, as I have only been once to Istanbul so far and was most of the time in the European part.
In total, about 77 million people live in Turkey. The official language is Turkish.
About 99 % of the Turks are Muslims. The majority belongs to the Sunni orientation of Islam. Today's Turkey was for a long time a centre of Christianity and has gone through a very eventful religious history. Traces of this Christian-Islamic interplay can be seen in Istanbul, for example in the Hagia Sophia.
